Rome, April 23, 2009
In the last few years Patient involvement has improved across Europe, due to the common effort of member states’ political bodies, professionals, scientific societies, patient representatives and other stakeholders.
Research projects have also offered new insights into patient requirements and expectations, with the development of methods and tools which enable greater patient involvement in their own care.
The European Union has focused on cross border issues and mobility, and has also responded to the demands of health services within Europe on quality. European associations of Patient Organizations have promoted initiatives to share experiences and expertise and to facilitate relationships, in order to enhance their role and accelerate patient participation. In this new framework, the Rome conference provides a common forum to share achievements and to define future scenarios.
