The Danish Society for Patient Safety

The Danish Society for Patient Safety (DSPS) was established in December 2001 and is a non-profit organisation. The aim of the Society is to ensure that aspects of patient safety are a part of all decisions made in Danish health care.

The board of the Society consists of representatives from a wide range of stakeholders in Danish health care: the health care professionals, patient and research organisations, the hospital owners, the pharmaceutical and medical device industry and Local Government Denmark. This composition offers a great possibility for all parties to work together for the common patient safety interest.

The Danish Society for Patient Safety gathers, spreads and develops knowledge and initiatives. The Society has become an important political platform for the work with patient safety and was involved in the preparation and passing of the Danish Act on Patient Safety. The Society provides advice to legislators and stakeholders, arranges study tours and conferences, suggest standards for safe operation, creates consensus on how to improve patient safety and facilitates networks of e.g. Patient Champions and projects as e.g. Operation Life Campaign (see www.operationlife.dk). The society supports a number of learning-oriented activities, such as national conferences, patient safety training, downloadable toolkits, keep up websites, and develop tools for patient empowerment as the patients’ book.

The Danish Society for Patient Safety has an ongoing working programme with areas identified for improvement.
